Overcoming Distractions
So a lot of times I have to redirect myself to pay attention and not be so damn distracted. A lot of my distractions come from me being back and forth on social media. The average person is distracted or interrupted every 40 seconds when working in front of their computer. In other words, we can’t work for even a single minute before we focus on something else. For myself, it can sometimes be easy to get on track. But when my attention is completely disrupted, it can take more than 20 minutes for me refocus. Hell, sometimes even longer.
Today I want to focus on regaining our focus. Coincidence huh? Us as humans, students, business owners, and being a parent/spouse, we often times have our attention on a million different things! Here’s 4 strategies we can do to regain our focus:
1. Create a distraction free ritual- An ideal environment in which to buckle down and focus on your most important, complex tasks — will help.
2. Set three daily intentions- When you work with greater intent, you focus on what’s actually important.
3. Work on hard stuff, and do more of it- Assess your busywork level. If it’s high, that’s usually a sign that you have the capacity to take on more.
4. Set an artificial project deadline- Have an entire afternoon to write and brainstorm? Give yourself 50 minutes to an hour. Making a task into a game forces you to spend more attention and energy on that project because it can no longer occupy hours of your time.
